Description

"Tree 10-25 m tall. Leaves elliptic to oblong, up to 18 cm long and 3 cm wide in juvenile and vigorous shoots, 3-8 cm long and 1.2-2.5 cm wide in reproductive and adult shoots, with short 2-3 mm petiole, acumiunate at apex, with a median groove in upper surface and a median ridge on lower surface, cuneate at base, margins revolute. Bud scales lanceolate. Microsporangiate strobilus axillary, sessile, solitary, long-cylindical, to 5 cm long. Ovulate strobilus with peduncle 10-20 mm long, receptacle 12 mm long with two fused woody, red bracts with divergent apices. Seed ovoid, 10 mm long, 5 mm in diameter, obtuse at apex, cristate" (Stevenson 1991).

Distribution and Ecology

Bolivia; Colombia; Panama; Peru; Venezuela. "Widely distributed from eastern Venezuela south to Bolivia. In cloud forest from 800-1600 m. Not yet known from the Guianas but to be expected in western Guyana" (Stevenson 1991).
